What to do in case of LPG Leaks
The LPG in your cylinder is stored under medium pressure in liquid form.
But in the unlikely scenario of a gas leak, it’s good to be prepared so that safety for everyone is ensured.
What are the causes of LPG leaks?
The gas leaks can be caused because of various factors related to handling of the cylinder, the equipment used in cooking and human error. Some of the major reasons are mentioned below:
Missing/Damaged O-Ring in the cylinder
Damaged Hose/Tube
Faulty Regulator
Leaky Cylinder
If the equipment is not fit correctly and is loose, it can cause gas leaks too.
Often it is noticed that when the food being cooked is left unattended, it spills out and dousing the burner flame, leading to an LPG leak. If the Gas Stove is close to an open window, the flame can also be extinguished by the wind coming in, resulting in an LPG leak.
LPG is heavier than air and thus settles down when it comes into the atmosphere. This does not allow the gas to get dispersed quickly and can be hazardous. And since LPG is also an odorless gas, to detect leaks by sense of smell well before it reaches alarming proportions, LPG is dozed with Mercaptan which gives it its distinct rotten egg smell.
What to do in case of LPG leaks?
Stay calm and do not panic as panicking can cause more damage by hindering a clear thought process.
Do not try to switch ON/OFF any electrical equipment as the spark from the switches can cause ignition.
Put off any source of flame like candles, incense sticks, cigarettes, lighters etc.
Switch off the gas appliance, turn the regulator off and remove it and use the safety cap on the cylinder.
Open all the doors, windows and ventilators of your home to ensure ventilation and drive out the leaked gas but make sure NOT TO turn on any electrical fans, for the reasons given in (ii).
Evacuate all the members safely and turn off the main electric supply line from OUTSIDE.
